Home to more 400 students between pre-kindergarten and sixth grade, this international magnet school’s student body represents more than 100 different nationalities. Dewey’s Parent-Teacher Organization asked HOK to consider a pro-bono project assessing ways to make the playground more hospitable.
The team developed a master plan that features basketball courts, a “peace garden,” infiltration basins, lawn mounds, vegetable plots and restored prairie.
To accommodate the school’s limited budget, HOK’s team created a master plan that could be completed over three summers. The first phase relocated faculty parking, reorganized bus traffic and created a welcoming pedestrian access route from the adjacent sidewalk. A learning garden and multi-purpose trellis provide a friendly access point for students.
