Brian Smiley, senior project architect in Philadelphia, will present on “The AIA COTE Top Ten Toolkit: Closing the Information Gap” at Green Building United’s Sustainability Symposium in Philadelphia at 3:30 p.m.
The COTE (Committee On The Environment) Top Ten Toolkit is a new design tool to help make all projects more sustainable using the AIA’s COTE Top Ten Awards program as a framework. This presentation will review the purpose behind the design tool, give an overview of the 10 measures in the framework and demonstrate how design teams are using the “super spreadsheet” to make specific projects more sustainable.

Sheryl Owen, sustainable design professional in HOK’s New York studio, will be moderating a panel organized by the IIDA NY Chapter’s Sustainability Forum. “Grading the Ratings: Looking Back, Looking Ahead” will take place at the Steelcase Showroom at 6:00 p.m.
The panel will explore WELL-, LEED-, and LBC-certified projects from the perspective of the designer, owner, engineer, and contractor. Each person will have a few minutes to share their experience of working with the rating system, comment on the process and the outcome. This will be followed by a Q&A session.

Todd Buchanan, practice leader in Seattle, will participate in a discussion on the Port of Seattle for the breakfast meeting of the Design-Build Institute of America, Western Washington, at 7:00 a.m.
The Port of Seattle, Walsh Construction and HOK will share challenges, opportunities and lessons learned during the completion of the Concourse D Annex project at Sea-Tac Airport.

This presentation will cover different options for flexible and activity-based work (ABW) environments in use today and include observational studies, building and floor access analysis and real-time tracking.
