The HOK-designed entertainment destination resort on China’s Hainan Island was honored as China and Asia’s Leading New Resort in the World Travel Awards (WTA), “the Oscars of the travel industry.”

“We are very proud to receive one of the most prestigious and exclusive distinctions in the global travel and tourism industry,” said Heiko Schreiner, Atlantis Sanya’s managing director. “Our team feels immensely proud to know that the travel and tourism professionals from across the globe show confidence in our remarkable products and service excellence.”

Set within a 48-story structure overlooking the South China Sea, the ocean-themed resort’s 1,314 guestrooms and 154 suites offer stunning views of the sea and underwater life. Crowning the tower is a 78-foot-tall lantern that responds to the rhythm of the tower’s linear balconies. The building’s curtain wall is also crafted with a wave pattern that ripples upward to reinforce the fluidity of the overall design. The property has one of the world’s largest open-air aquariums, as well as exhibit space and a waterpark.

Inspired by waves crashing against the island’s rocky coast, HOK designed the Atlantis tower to rise in two fin-like forms that are joined to create a dramatic massing. The team conceived the building podium, including the main lobby rotunda, as a series of spiraling vortexes of water streaming away from the towers.
