Robert Burns and Andrew Elmer Join HOK’s Sports + Recreation + Entertainment Practice

Robert Burns (left), business development director, and Andrew Elmer, project manager and landscape architect, join the global practice in Dallas and Kansas City, respectively.

Robert Burns has joined HOK as a director of business development for Sports + Recreation + Entertainment and associate based in Dallas. He brings more than 10 years of experience in building and sustaining client relationships, leading market research and analysis, and guiding project pursuits in the sports industry.

Andrew Elmer, PLA, ASLA, CLARB, has joined HOK in Kansas City as a project manager and associate. He has more than a decade of experience in planning, landscape design and project management of intercollegiate athletic facilities around the nation, including University of Kansas, Syracuse University, Penn State University, University of Missouri-Kansas City and Baylor University. With a background in urban design and landscape architecture, Elmer understands the unique master planning challenges and opportunities facing universities.

“Adding Robert and Andrew to our team is an important step in continuing to expand our  capabilities and reach to better serve our clients,” said Nate Appleman, director of Sports + Recreation + Entertainment and a senior principal at HOK. “Their experience, leadership and energy strengthens our ability to deliver great experiences for fans, athletes, teams and campuses. Both Robert and Andrew bring a deep understanding of the business of collegiate athletics and the intersection of our clients’ goals with innovative design solutions.”

Burns joins HOK from HKS, where he specialized in developing sports and entertainment projects for collegiate clients. He brings additional experience working with athletic foundations across the country to develop tailored fundraising initiatives and donor engagement strategies for collegiate athletics. Burns graduated from Missouri University of Science and Technology, where he was a student-athlete, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

“I’m looking forward to being part of a growing practice that is committed to innovating in the collegiate and professional sports marketplaces,” said Burns. “I’m inspired by the positive impact stadiums, ballparks, arenas and training facilities can have on communities and campuses across the nation.”

Elmer is a former student-athlete and graduate of The Ohio State University and a licensed landscape architect. He brings a unique perspective for clients seeking to better understand how to improve the student-athlete experience, recruit top talent and integrate athletic facilities into the campus fabric.

“Today’s collegiate sports facilities play a vital role in building a campus culture by delivering great experiences for fans and athletes alike,” said Elmer. “I’m excited to use both my project management and campus planning experience to help HOK’s clients uncover new opportunities and synergies for sports projects on their campuses.”
