HOK’s thought leaders give presentations and participate in panel discussions all over the world. Here’s our speaker roundup for June, with a special focus on the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018 in New York.

Cesar Escalante, design and technology manager, and Alberto Tono, research and development intern, will participate in a panel on “Taming Technology’s Dragons to Engage Stakeholders as Project Collaborators” at AIASF Next at the San Francisco Art Institute at 4:15 p.m.

This panel discussion will examine how use of new technologies enables citizens to engage in the planning and design of their communities and urban institutions.

Roana Tirado, senior landscape designer, and Rae Smith, senior urban planner, will participate in “Designing for Equity: SF Bayview Parks Plan” at AIASF Next at 4:15 p.m.

Marginalized neighborhoods in San Francisco desperately need access to nature, healthy foods and safe public spaces. This panel will encourage participants to seek their own creative public-private partnerships, unique infrastructural solutions and participatory engagement processes within their communities.

Brian JencekBrian Jencek, HOK’s director of planning, will present “Between the Smart City and the Participatory City: When Technology and Mobility Meet Public Health and Community” at Social Equity by Design, the Environmental Design Research Association’s national conference in Oklahoma City.

At this critical moment in the evolution of cities, an important counterforce is missing: the ability to adequately measure the human experience and optimize for it. Using case studies from HOK, this presentation will investigate the interface between technology and urban design in contemporary urban development.

Kay Sargent, director of WorkPlace, and Betsy Nurse, director of interiors in  Atlanta, will present “Moving Beyond Open Plan” at NeoCon in Chicago at 9:30 a.m.

The panel will investigate how companies determine the right design solutions to match their needs. Immersive environments pull the best lessons learned from work spaces—including open plan, coworking, ABW, NCE and MEMO—and tailor them to meet the specific needs of each space.

Mara Baum, sustainable design leader for health and wellness, will present “Restorative Design for Healthcare Workers: From Research to Practice” at the European Healthcare Design conference at 4 p.m.

Owners, designers and researchers are accelerating approaches to foster restorative staff environments, reduce burnout and improve well-being. This session will explore aspects of healthcare planning and design that directly impact staff well-being. The presenters will also introduce the Well Living Lab, a new collaboration of Delos and the Mayo Clinic that brings together world-class medical research capabilities and a focus on indoor environmental factors and human health.

As part of the Greenbiz Verge Hawaii conference, Paul Woolford, design principal for HOK’s San Francisco office, will lead a tour of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Inouye Regional Center (IRC) on Ford Island, Hawaii, at 8:30 a.m.

The design features the adaptive reuse of two historic, World War II-era hangars originally designed by Albert Kahn and linked by a new addition on a national historic landmark site in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The facility consolidates hundreds of employees from 15 existing sites around Oahu into a state-of-the-art, 350,000-sf.-ft. research and office campus.

Leah Hofferkamp, architect in HOK’s St. Louis office, will participate in “Turning Barriers into Opportunities: Women in Construction Administration” during the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018 at 8:45 a.m.

Diversity and gender parity is essential not only in the design process but also in the construction administration (CA) process. Barriers for women include lack of opportunities for professional growth when compared to male counterparts. Join this session and hear how women have overcome traditional gender role barriers.

During the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018 in New York, Bill Roger, director of Healthcare, and Mara Baum, sustainable design leader for health and wellness, both based in HOK’s San Francisco office, will present “Mission Impossible: Patient-Focused Care in a Naturally Ventilated Hospital?” at 8:45 a.m.

Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) in Singapore has created a new paradigm for healthcare design, with a unique approach to sustainability and the patient experience. A recent COTE Top 10 Award recipient, NTFGH incorporates natural ventilation, daylighting, personal environmental controls and vertical vegetation throughout the 18-story campus. This session will highlight Singapore’s healthcare delivery model, NTFGH’s sustainable design approach and key indoor environmental quality research findings that offer new lessons for U.S. hospital design.

During the Green Sports Alliance Summit in Atlanta, Chris DeVolder, managing principal in HOK’s Kansas City office, will participate in a workshop on “The Living Stadium: Designing a Regenerative Future for Sports” at Mercedes-Benz Stadium at 2:30 p.m.

The panel includes participants from Arup, the International Living Future Institute, the City of Atlanta and the Green Sports Alliance. The interdisciplinary group will lead a discussion about how to improve sustainability in sports design, looking to the LEED Platinum certified Mercedes-Benz Stadium as an example.
