Significant HOK Projects Opening in 2018
Anticipated openings include an 80-story tower, two airport terminal phases, a research campus, two sports venues, two hospitals, an international school, a convention center expansion, two academic research buildings and a resort hotel.
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Soaring 1,260 feet above the surrounding Riyadh cityscape, the 80-story PIF Tower is one of the world’s most high-tech supertall buildings—and it’s also expected to achieve LEED Gold status. It is the new centerpiece and tallest structure within the King Abdullah Financial District.
LaGuardia Airport Central Terminal B — Concourse B
New York, New York
The design of LaGuardia Airport’s Central Terminal B will provide a state-of-the-art passenger terminal and modern New York travel experience. Concourse B, the first of two new concourses, will open in 2018. LaGuardia Gateway Partners will design, build, manage and maintain LaGuardia’s Terminal B. LaGuardia Gateway Partners is composed of Vantage Airport Group, Skanska ID, Meridiam, and JLC Infrastructure for development and equity investment; Skanska/Walsh as the design-build joint venture; HOK and WSP as the design and engineering joint venture; and Vantage Airport Group for management of the terminal operations.
Atlantis Sanya Resort
The design for this world-class Atlantis Sanya destination reinterprets the myth of Atlantis on Hainan Island overlooking the South China Sea. Atlantis Sanya Resort offers guests interactive experiences including a waterpark, lagoons, fresh and salt water pools, educational exhibits, entertainment venues, spa treatments, world-class dining experiences and luxurious accommodations.
Penn State University Chemical and Biomedical Engineering Building
State College, Pennsylvania
Penn State University’s Chemical and Biomedical Engineering building unites two previously separate departments in a collaborative environment to create new academic and research synergies. The contemporary, contextual structure is designed as a glass-and-brick mass floating above a refined fieldstone veneer base that anchors the building to the landscape and connects to the university’s established greenway.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Modernization — First Canopy
HOK is leading the joint venture team designing a $200 million improvement at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport’s domestic passenger terminal, including the addition of two large canopies over curbside pick-up and drop-off areas and a redesigned central atrium space. The solution embraces the buzz of the world’s most traveled airport while giving passengers a sense of ease and clarity navigating the terminal. The first canopy will be completed by late summer.
NewYork Presbyterian Hospital David H. Koch Center
New York, New York
Located in Manhattan’s Upper East Side on York Avenue between 68th and 69th Streets, the David H. Koch Center is designed to provide patients with high quality, personalized care in a comfortable, technologically sophisticated setting. Set to open in April, the Center is a one-stop, multispecialty treatment center for digestive diseases, cancer and more. Through this state-of-the-art facility, patients will receive integrated care and undergo complex procedures on an outpatient basis, all in a single location.
International School of Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The new sustainable campus for the International School of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia’s capital city will bring the formerly separate elementary, middle and high schools together under one roof. The heart of the school is the central plaza where the entire educational community can gather. Check out the ongoing construction in this video.
Philips Arena Renovation
The $192.5 million renovation of Philips Arena will create a building that is authentic to Atlanta and inspired by the excitement and inclusiveness of the city’s Beltline. The reimagined arena will include new amenities on every level of the building, including clubs, suites and luxury boxes, 360-degree connected concourses on all levels, improved sightlines and state-of-the-art video throughout. Phase 1 will open this year.
LG Science Park
Seoul, South Korea
Located in Seoul’s Magok District, the LG Science Park is an 11.8-million-sq.-ft. research and science campus providing facilities to support innovative research and industrial prototyping. Accommodating 19,000 employees, it provides flexible buildings and laboratories facilitating virtually every type of scientific research.
Kentucky International Convention Center
The expansion of the Kentucky International Convention Center will increase exhibit space by more than one-third and add a 40,000-sq.-ft. ballroom, all within the existing footprint. In addition to enhancing the exterior of the building, the design will improve navigation and pedestrian flow, emphasize entrances and improve the meeting rooms.
University of Maryland, Baltimore Health Sciences Facility III
The Health Sciences Facility III will combine the university’s medicine, dentistry and pharmacy schools to maximize interaction and resource-sharing. The new building will be a critical tool for the university to use in recruiting and retaining the best faculty, students and staff.
The new Sachibondu Hospital in the northwest region of Zambia is being developed by Orkidstudio. HOK collaborated to help shape the design of the new hospital, which will improve the quality of care in this remote corner of Africa. Built using sustainable practices and materials, the project has engaged the community in the construction process and created new educational and training opportunities.
Towson University Burdick Hall Expansion
The expansion of Towson University’s recreation center at Burdick Hall offers students a range of fitness options. Located north of downtown Baltimore, Towson University is enhancing its student-life experience by creating a vibrant, healthy campus. In addition to accommodating more students and its growing recreation programs, the addition will become a cornerstone of Towson’s recruiting efforts.
