HOK’s Anica Landreneau Describes How Designers Can Influence Building Codes
Designers are taking a more active role in changing building codes to enhance occupant health and support active design principles.
“Since 2010, New York City has partnered with the Center for Active Design to publish the Active Design Guidelines, which are geared to prompt more physical activity.
“‘That’s an area where designers have been instrumental,’ said Anica Landreneau, director of sustainable design for the global architecture firm HOK. She cites the example of stairwells in large buildings that ‘have been isolated because they’re egress stairs. But we want to encourage stairway use by putting [them] out in the open.’”
