ASU Sun Devil Fitness Complex Named Athletic Business 2015 Facility of Merit
The Arizona State University West Campus Sun Devil Fitness Complex designed by HOK in Glendale, Ariz., was recognized by Athletic Business in the publication’s annual Facilities of Merit competition.
Recipients of the award are chosen based on plan efficiency, interior and exterior design, the relationship the building to the site and the cost of construction for the value received.
“Judges responded to the building’s three-story configuration, which houses a variety of ‘fitness neighborhoods’ and creates not only visual but audible connections between interior spaces. Students played a major role in programming the building, which completes a new campus quad and further represents the school’s evolution from a commuter campus.
“A contemporary statement within a formal, red-brick-and-colonnade context, the fitness complex on ASU’s West Campus spoke to panelists with its generous use of exterior glass overlooking an adjacent recreation field and an outdoor pool.
“Said one panelist, ‘I loved the exterior materials and rich rhythm of shape and color against the desert landscape. The facility as a whole stands as a true testimony of architectural creativity, signaling all to come and play.’”
The fitness complex includes a two-court gymnasium, a three-lane indoor running track, cardio and strength training areas, multipurpose studios for group fitness, racquetball courts, athletic fields, a wellness clinic with a demonstration kitchen, exterior exercise terraces and an outdoor pool for recreation and competition.
