The Benefits of buildingSMART and BIM for HOK's Clients

HOK uses buildingSMART® principles to create high-performance spaces that are more cost effective and faster to deliver for clients worldwide.
buildingSMART is an approach to design that leverages 3D modeling, concurrent analysis and integrated project delivery practices. Building information modeling (BIM) is at the heart of HOK’s buildingSMART program. BIM enables project teams to collaborate on virtual models, test ideas, optimize building performance and coordinate work before beginning procurement or construction.
Our approach to buildingSMART adds value across all phases of design, construction and occupancy:

DESIGN: Make important design decisions with ease and understand their impact earlier, when it adds the most value
- Visualize forms in new ways
- Solve functional problems faster
- Make more informed decision-making with automatically updated quantities
- Integrate workplace standards (furniture, lighting, power, telecom) into design for future use as an accurate FM deliverable
- Achieve new goals for quality, speed of delivery, energy consumption, sustainability and cost
CONSTRUCTION: Add predictability to construction costs and outcomes
- Experience fewer change orders and RFIs
- Minimize on-site installation conflicts
- Facilitate pre-fabrication and assembly
- Optimize schedule
- Provide more accurate estimating, visual phasing and schedule analysis

OPERATION/EVALUATION: Incorporate a wide range of inputs for new efficiencies in facility management, maintenance and operations
- Reduce and make operating costs more predictable
- Create more efficient operations
- Link to intelligent design information (FF&E, space management and tracking, occupancy models, energy consumption and scheduled maintenance)
- Streamline FM handover
- Enhance building performance
Specific benefits HOK’s clients have experienced from buildingSMART include:
- Construction cost savings as high as 19 percent*
- Schedule compression by as much as six months*
- Energy reductions of 26 percent compared to the ASHRAE 90.1 standard
