Phillips 66 Headquarters

Houston, Texas

Phillips 66’s headquarters brings together 2,200 employees on a campus in Houston’s vibrant Westchase District. The headquarters consists of two office towers and a parking garage with rooftop sports courts.

A landscaped arrival garden evokes feelings of a tranquil drive through Texas hill country. As visitors approach the lobby space, cascading water features enrich the arrival experience. The buildings’ first two levels are clad in a regional Texas limestone that continues from the exterior into the interior public spaces.

The building podium houses a conference and training center, a full servery and kitchen, an employee fitness center, and a central gathering and event space with an 80-foot x 210-foot glass skylight.

HOK’s architects and engineers collaborated on several strategies to improve energy efficiency and reduce life-cycle costs. High-performance HVAC systems achieve ultra-energy efficiency while providing reliable operations, easy maintenance and flexibility. Designed to optimize daylight and thermal comfort, the towers’ high-performance enclosure systems include sun shades adjusted for each individual exposure. To operate the facility, an advanced building automation system integrates multiple  systems on a common platform across a shared network. Office levels have raised access floors that are flexible to accommodate continuously changing space and technology needs.

Structural steel framing supports the open floor plans and provides future flexibility for the office towers. Using post-tensioned, cast-place-concrete for the parking structure allowed for the central utility plant, electrical vault and a net-enclosed sports court to be located on the roof. A bridge connecting the office towers has a series of two-story trusses. The team used advanced design analysis tools to eliminate the need for an expansion joint in the bridge between the towers. Drilled piers, mat slabs, spread footings and two-way structural slabs-on grade support the buildings while mitigating the highly expansive soil conditions.
