The U.A. Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Building provides essential research and instructional facilities focused on advancing biomedical engineering for the College of Engineering. The building includes state-of-the-art lab, classroom and office space.
HOK’s design creates easily expandable, adaptable and versatile labs. Flexible modules use a “kit of parts” that researchers can quickly convert for wet or dry research. To encourage creativity, classrooms have 360 degrees of writable wall space.
The high-performance glazing system and efficient HVAC system, including a separate air handling system in the office wing, helped save first costs and operating costs.
The building accommodates a new program of biomedical engineering, including specific spaces that support an active, problem-based learning (PBL) approach. A suite of five PBL rooms has white-board walls reaching from the floor to the ceiling. A design studio on the lower level supports engineering students who are learning to draw and prototype a design.
