Developed by Friedman Properties, the Clark and Grand Hotels project features separate hotels for three competing brands: Aloft Chicago City Center, Hyatt Place and the Fairfield Inn & Suites. The complex is on a block bounded by Clark Street, Grand Avenue, Dearborn Street and Illinois Street.
To help give each hotel its own identity, HOK’s design provides three separate entrances.
The exterior materials feature a combination of stone and glass systems that appeal to pedestrians at the ground level. A combination of aluminum window-wall and pre-cast concrete cover the upper floors’ street facades, with different expressions for each hotel.
Each hotel benefits from efficiencies achieved by sharing amenity and basement public spaces as well as back-of-house service functions. White Lodging manages all three properties.
The project earned LEED-NC Silver certification. Sustainable design strategies include combining a high-performance envelope with efficient mechanical systems and controls, which both respond to the increase in perimeter thermal performance. As only the third new construction LEED-certified hotel project in Chicago, the energy performance is 38 percent better than a typical hotel in the city.
