Renewing Oregon’s Mental Health System

Oregon State Hospital
Replacement Psychiatric Hospitals

Salem and Junction City, Oregon, USA

“HOK's ability to effectively reach out and communicate with various stakeholders, from mental health advocacy groups, historic preservationists, neighborhood associations and concerned citizens, was critical to the success of the Oregon State Hospital Replacement Project in Salem.”

Richard Ross
Department of Human Services, Oregon State Hospital

As the state’s largest-ever capital project, the Oregon State Hospital replacement program includes design and construction of two psychiatric hospitals to house all the psychiatric beds in Oregon.

HOK and Portland-based SRG designed the replacement project.

In Salem, a new 620-bed facility has transformed one of the oldest mental health hospitals on the West Coast to a “treatment mall” recovery-based model of care that takes patients away from living units to a central area for training and rehabilitative activities.

A 360-bed hospital under construction in Junction City is based on a centralized treatment model as a way to provide comprehensive, consistent therapeutic opportunities to all patients.

Structured to support healing, recovery and a return to successful community living, both projects are pursuing a minimum of LEED Silver certification. At least 5 percent of each facility’s energy use will be self-generated.
