These new studios have transformed the environment and culture within the Frost School of Music. The complex features two sleek, architecturally striking buildings that create a grand entrance to the music school’s Coral Gables campus.
Inside, each of the 77 chamber-music studios is a “floating box-within-a-box,” with independent walls, floors and ceilings that provide the best acoustics for teaching, learning and performing music. The buildings also have two oversized rehearsal halls, a reception center and a furnished breezeway.
South Florida’s tropical climate influenced the sustainable design strategies for the LEED Platinum facility. Distinctive, angular windows punctuate the white precast concrete facade, maximizing natural light and minimizing solar heat gain and glare. Windows use electrochromic glass that dims automatically. In addition to integrated rooftop solar panels and water cisterns, the building has a highly efficient chilled beam air conditioning system.
