Bridging Natural and Social Sciences

Emory University Psychology and Interdisciplinary Sciences Building
Atlanta, Georgia, USA

“The psychology building is a key part of Emory’s strategic plan to strengthen bridges between the natural sciences and the social sciences. At the university level, it will foster progress in our strategic initiatives for neuroscience, predictive health, computational life sciences and global health.”

Earl Lewis, PhD
Former Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Emory University

This new facility more than doubles the space of the old psychology building, bringing together faculty and graduate student offices, laboratories, classrooms and clinical work spaces previously spread over six locations.

The Child Studies Center on the main floor offers a warm, friendly setting where researchers focus on the origin and development of language and memory.

To reduce the structural impact on vibration-sensitive equipment, a state-of-the-art imaging center is located on the first level. The fMRI facility contains fMRI equipment, as well as an fMRI simulation space, MEG equipment, data collection laboratories and support spaces.

The third and fourth floors contain cognition labs where faculty and students investigate the evolutionary origins of language, memory and thought. The top floor houses the Psychological Center, serving members of the community in need of testing, assessment and intervention, as well as labs for groundbreaking research on mental health.

Sustainable features integrated into the design include a bioswale in the courtyard to reduce storm water runoff. Ninety-two percent of the wood-based building materials were harvested from FSC-certified forests. Natural light fills the high-tech labs and classrooms.
