“The Greenway Self-Park in Chicago’s River North neighborhood shines like a beacon of enlightened green design on a block crowded with office and residential towers.”
This sustainable, energy-efficient garage is a respectful but distinctive addition to Chicago’s River North neighborhood.
Located at Clark Street and Kinzie Street, the garage features a naturally ventilated, glazed screen facade. An array of vertical turbines rising on the southwest corner of the garage is designed to harvest available wind to power the facility’s exterior wall lighting.
A reversible meter measures and potentially returns power to the city’s grid throughout the year. Other sustainable design strategies include a cistern rainwater collection system and a wayfinding system that educates Chicagoans on environmental responsibility.
