Converting a 1950s Airport Terminal into a New Museum

Silent Wings Museum at Lubbock International Airport
Lubbock, Texas, USA

HOK provided architectural and exhibit design for the Silent Wings Museum, which is located in a 1950s-era airport terminal at Lubbock International Airport.

HOK designed the interior renovations of the old Lubbock Airport passenger terminal as well as a new “hangar” area for displaying restored Waco CG-4A gliders and other large exhibits.

The museum documents the history of gliders in warfare. The exhibits include a timeline of the history of the gliders, their campaigns during World War II, vignettes of glider construction and pilot training, web link reminiscences, weapons and uniforms, and a landing tableau.

The adaptive reuse also an auditorium, offices, gift shop and an exhibit fabrication shop.

A new 8,600-square-foot glass-enclosed gallery overlooking the airport’s runways houses two vintage World War II gliders.
