The team designed the renovation of the exterior facade as well as the mall’s interior space. In addition to serving as a weather envelope, the facade supports Sanya’s branding and advertising programs.
The design concept is based on the varying light, reflection and surface of waves in water. Aluminum vertical fins along the main facade are grouped to create sculptural wave forms of varying lengths.
The facade design consists of a custom curtain wall system with an integrated LED display that presents a 160-meter image across the facade. By locating LED units on either side of the curtain wall mullions, HOK’s design creates a dynamic facade that slowly morphs from one image to another. This constantly changing facade stands out among the brightly lit, busy streets of the resort town.
