A LEED Platinum Research Building

University of California Davis
Veterinary Medicine Research Facility 3B

Davis, California, USA

“Veterinary Medicine 3B will provide modern, innovative research facilities and a platform for the School of Veterinary Medicine to continue rising to even greater heights.”

Linda P.B. Katehi, PhD
Chancellor, University of California Davis

This four-story research building is dedicated to improving the health of animals, people and the environment.

HOK provided architecture, interior design, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering for the building, which includes open labs, support spaces, offices and a BSL-3 suite. The integrated environment features open lab and office suites organized around a central hub for shared facilities. The high-quality indoor environment gives researchers ample daylighting, exterior views and natural ventilation.

HOK’s design strategies reduce energy consumption while allowing for operable windows in office areas. Preliminary energy modeling indicated potential energy savings of more than 30 percent. These savings result from the use of a radiant cooling system, efficient lighting, an improved building envelope, and high efficiency fans and motors. Radiant cooling systems use water as the heat transfer medium. Rooftop areas are PV ready to accommodate future installations of solar PV.

Water conservation strategies included elimination of once-through cooling water and water-efficient plumbing fixtures.

The process was a model for integrated design. The team used Revit for architectural and interior elements, the structural frame and MEP systems. HOK’s team used the Labs21 Environmental Performance Criteria as a design guide and the project achieved LEED Platinum certification.
