The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center provides world-class facilities for the medical treatment of injured service members and other Department of Defense personnel.
HOK’s design transformed an existing courtyard space between two buildings into a healing garden. The site is near the main lobby and provides easy access to both the inpatient beds and the outpatient dormitory.
The design incorporates positive distractions and a multi-sensory experience within a combination of open and closed spaces. Visitors experience the healing garden in stages.
The western courtyard features planted earth forms that divide spaces into public and private areas, a one-story water wall and an enclosed glass atrium that acts as a transition space and relaxes the sensitive patient environment.
The eastern courtyard provides a series of stone ramps and sloped gardens that offer access into the garden from the campus, terminating at a large reflecting pool.
