The Samuel L. Kountz Kidney Transplant Unit offers space for the hospital to serve post-surgical patients and provide ongoing treatment for transplant patients. The design transforms inpatient accommodations within the 50-year-old hospital by advancing a new culture of hospitality in a high-tech, high-quality care environment that focuses on patients and their families.
HOK’s research program informed design strategies, including use of glass doors to promote visibility between nurses and patients and carpeted nurse stations to reduce noise. The design provides patients with extensive access to natural light and outdoor views.
A community-focused artwork program brings warmth to patient rooms, the central nurse station, a key circulation corridor and the family waiting area. The artwork includes original photographs of iconic Brooklyn landmarks and parks by renowned photographer Accra Shepp. Each image incorporates natural settings to promote a soothing, healing environment.
