Embracing the goals of the city’s master plan, the landscaped spaces establish a prominent, gracious Southern presence for the Social Security Administration’s new regional payment and training center. The design helps restore continuity to the area while establishing a vibrant, welcoming presence.
The design facilitates interaction among the SSA’s 2,200 people. A large glass “main street” functions as the heart of the building, linking the civic plaza at the main entrance to the internal town Square.
Amenities include a fitness center, full-service cafeteria, child care center, credit union and auditorium. Several innovative and largely “invisible” security components maintain balance with the overall design.
Environmentally friendly strategies for the LEED Silver certified building include a large green roof, a water collection system for recycling rainwater for landscaping irrigation, a natural light harvesting system and a raised floor system that improves air quality through better ventilation.
The project was the result of a public-private partnership between Opus and GSA.
