A Sustainable Military
Healing Community

Kaiserslautern Military Community Medical Center
Kaiserslautern, Germany

“Our goal is the development-quality, sustainable healing environment that clearly improves patient outcomes and affirms the trust of beneficiaries served.”

Col. Brad Dunbar
Health Facilities Planning Agency, United States Army

The US and German governments have jointly commissioned a military medical center that will serve a community of more than 36,000 active and retired military personnel and their families.

As a place of great clinical innovation, the center will bring together Army and Air Force services to deliver care from one location, enhancing operational efficiencies and the overall patient experience.

Patient care will be organized around centers of specializations, which will align related services into population-specific centers. This arrangement will support a rapid cycle model of care to serve injured military personnel arriving directly from active duty.

With the primary goal of creating a sustainable healing environment that improves patient outcomes and affirms the trust of the individuals served, the project will comply with both US and German requirements and pursue LEED Silver certification.

Advanced technology is guiding the design process, with building information modeling tools enabling the project team to work collaboratively across two continents and engage with more than 20 consultant teams.

The facility is designed to perform at a high level throughout its life cycle, using standardized building modules to enhance flexibility and accommodate future changes in medical services and technologies.

HOK is collaborating with HWP Planungsgesellschaft on the design.
