The 5-kilometer-long Bingzhou Island lies at the confluence of three rivers and Tong’an Bay in the northeast of Xiamen. HOK’s team analyzed the island ecosystem structure that handles fresh water flows from three rivers and tidal sea water from the bay. The resolution proposes a barrier island, sand dunes and tidal marshes to stabilize the edges using diverse technical engineering and ecologically proven methods.
The Xiamen Tong’an New Town Bingzhou Island Urban Design plan integrates existing communities to create a comprehensive blueprint for the entire island.
A monorail system, attractive waterfront, and rich ecological and cultural resources will help make the island a unique tourist destination in Xiamen Bay.
