The building’s clear organization allows the program to be arranged differently than typical R&D facilities. The company’s various scientific disciplines work within general, industrial and environmental technology labs, as well as office and meeting spaces. This inversion conveys Samsung’s collaborative culture.
HOK designed the building skin as a series of shells that protect the facility from sun and wind. These enclosure structures promote natural daylight and reduce the building’s dependency on mechanical systems by protecting it from extreme summer and winter temperatures.
Plants on the rooftop and sky gardens replace the natural vegetation displaced by the building. All building systems are digitally controlled to monitor indoor and outdoor environmental condition and maximize energy efficiency.
