A New Vision for a Historic Hong Kong Airport

Kai Tak Archipelago Airport Adaptive Reuse
Hong Kong, China

After it was vacated in 1998, developers sought a new vision for Kai Tak, an airport constructed in the 1920s on a reclaimed peninsula.

HOK’s adaptive reuse plan would inspire redevelopment of the former airport while improving the water quality in Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong’s celebrated harbor.

The proposed plan introduces an environmentally sensitive approach that would greatly increase the community’s access to the waterfront amenity that characterizes Hong Kong living.

The master plan celebrates the heritage of the Kai Tak Airport by converting the existing runway into an archipelago of island neighborhoods, with new channels cut to increase waterfront open space, improve water quality, promote aquatic recreational opportunities and enhance views to the central harbor.

A vast waterfront park carries the development’s harborside character deep into the surrounding community, enhancing real estate value and catalyzing the redevelopment of neighboring districts from industrial areas into new commercial centers.

At the end of the residential island chain, accessed by ferry, tram and cycling paths, is a cultural destination to commemorate Kai Tak’s aviation history. An aerospace museum keeps the tip of the runway accessible to the public.
