Mary Ann Lazarus Is One of St. Louis' Most Influential Business Women

The St. Louis Business Journal named HOK's director of sustainable design to its annual list.

Story

Lazarus first came into contact with the concept of green building design in 1976 during class at Washington University. Now, as senior vice president and firmwide sustainable design director, she is tasked with integrating those design concepts into the company's work.

Lazarus is the architecture chair of Washington University's Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts' National Council. She serves on various green councils both nationally and locally. Nationally, she is on the steering committee and chairs the educational program committee for Greenbuild.

"The greatest challenge facing HOK, our industry and indeed the planet is climate change," says Lazarus. "We're already seeing an unprecedented shift in climate patterns and species extinction. Without a rapid shift in emissions patterns, we are reaching a tipping point that may be impossible to undo."

"There is a much higher percentage of women in leadership roles in the green building world than in traditional architecture," adds Lazarus. "With the enormous need for innovative approaches to design, I tell young women graduates that they are in a great position to help lead the way to a new sustainable future."
