HOK Board Names Bill Hellmuth CEO

Bill Hellmuth, AIA, took over as HOK’s chief executive officer on April 19, 2016, with longtime CEO Patrick MacLeamy, FAIA, moving to chairman as part of a planned succession process.

Based in the firm’s Washington, D.C., studio in Georgetown’s historic Canal House, Hellmuth had been HOK’s president. His promotion to CEO signaled a renewed emphasis on design thinking and innovation across HOK. For the first time since 1990, when Gyo Obata stepped down to assume the role of chairman, the firm’s CEO was a design principal. Hellmuth brought special insight on managing the creative process—balancing the art and the business to generate the most value for clients.

Hellmuth joined the firm in St. Louis in 1991. Two years later, he was promoted to lead HOK’s office in Washington, D.C. He joined the firm’s executive committee in 2004 and was elected as HOK’s president in 2005.
