Extending the National Air and Space Museum

Even as HOK is designing the National Air and Space Museum in DC for the Smithsonian Institution in 1976, the client is aware that its confined location on the National Mall will permit only about one percent of the accumulated artifacts to be displayed to the public.

Fortunately, HOK designs an extension to the NASM — the massive Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va. — that is built to display more than 300 aircraft and large space artifacts that would otherwise remain unavailable for public viewing. The enormous facility includes exhibition areas, an IMAX theater, an observation tower and a large restoration and preservation hangar.

The environmental and energy conservation systems at the Udvar-Hazy Center set a new standard for artifact preservation.
