Building a World-Class Saudi Arabian Research University in 30 Months

HOK leads the planning and design of King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST), a 5.5 million-sq.-ft. campus spanning 27 buildings in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia, along the Red Sea that houses the world’s most advanced collection of labs across the spectrum of science.

As part of a national effort to expand Saudi Arabia’s economy beyond fossil fuels, the mission of the university is to address humanity’s most urgent scientific challenges related to energy and the environment. Interdisciplinary research at KAUST includes pursuing sustainable solutions for water, energy and food.

Because the campus has 27 buildings, a set of overarching design strategies is created to maintain a sense of continuity. The campus reinterprets traditional Arabic building strategies in contemporary materials and assemblies to create an appropriately grounded environmental response.

The team successfully addresses King Abdullah’s vision for the project through a highly compressed design process that integrates 300 people from 11 HOK offices to accommodate an extraordinarily demanding two-and-a-half-year design and construction schedule. To support real-time collaboration among multi-office project teams, HOK installs Advanced Collaboration Rooms that combine high-resolution videoconferencing technology with a virtual flipchart system.

When it opens, KAUST is the world’s largest LEED Platinum project and Saudi Arabia’s first LEED-certified project. It is an AIA/COTE Top Ten Green Project winner
