DFW: America's First Regional Airport

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport becomes the nation’s first truly regional airport, serving as a hub for international travel and commerce for the entire Southwestern US.

Touted by the press as an “airport to fit people,” HOK’s concept minimizes the walking distance between automobile parking and aircraft gates. Each loop-shaped terminal provides parking for planes on the outside of the circle and parking for cars on the inside. DFW is, essentially, America’s first drive-in air travel.

With a 17,500-acre site, the airport covers an area the size of Manhattan. In addition to being America’s largest airport at the time, DFW is heralded for its convenience and its crisp, clean detailing that emphasizes precast concrete as both structural and finished material.
