Ng Teng Fong General Hospital Wins Building Better Healthcare Award for Sustainability

Building Better Healthcare (UK) presented its 2017 award for Sustainable Development to the HOK-designed Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Jurong Community Hospital in Singapore.

The high-performance hospital complex features numerous sustainable design features, including passive cooling, natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting, daylighting and solar-heated water.

The sawtooth plan of Ng Teng Fong General Hospital provides every patient with a window and responds to capture prevailing breezes. Just 30 percent of the hospital requires air conditioning. Exterior shading, operable windows, ceiling fans, thermal mass and cross ventilation ensure temperatures remain comfortable despite Singapore’s tropical climate.

The 1.8-million-sq.-ft. facility reintroduces ecology into an urban, heavily developed region. The hospitals include vegetated balconies and rooftop gardens planted with native flora and a stormwater capture, reuse and infiltration system. The design EUI of 72 kBtu/sf/year represents a 38 percent reduction compared to the typical Singaporean hospital and a 69 percent reduction compared to U.S. hospitals.

Earlier this year, Green Mark Platinum hospital facility also received an AIA COTE (Committee on the Environment) Top 10 Award as one of the best examples of sustainable design.

HOK served as design and medical planning consultant on the hospitals and collaborated with the Singapore Ministry of Health and a team that included CPG Corporation (prime architect and architect of record) and Studio 505 (design collaborator focusing on building envelope development). WSP handled engineering on the project.
