Mark Magazine Profiles Hamad International Airport Passenger Terminal Complex in Doha

Hamad International Airport, Doha, Qatar

Capable of accommodating up to 30 million annual passengers, the HOK-designed Hamad International Airport Passenger Terminal Complex anticipates the ongoing growth of Qatar’s capital city.

“The global firm exercised its renowned attention to sustainability and context in its choice of materials, with steel frames supporting high-performance glass walls and skylights that reduce solar heat gain and glare while flooding the interior with natural light and offering views of the surrounding desert.”

“Structural arches, minimalist adornment and terrazzo floors optimise circulation inside. A wood-paneled ceiling spanning the longest concourse attempts to provide a warm, homey contrast to the metallic frame and the hectic flux of travelers.”

“The main entrance volume heightens the iconic aesthetic of the airport with an undulating roof intended to recall ocean waves and sand dunes – evoking Doha’s physical topography and asserting an image as the country’s ‘gateway to the world’, in the architects’ words.”
