HOK Designs Presidential CANdidates Sculpture for Annual Food Drive

HOK’s New York office participated in the 23rd annual Canstruction food drive and design contest with a creative take on the “Presidential CANdidates.”

Every year before Thanksgiving, Canstruction hosts design competitions across the United States and Canada challenging the AEC industry to create whimsical sculptures out of canned goods. Exhibits are on display in public spaces to encourage people to donate canned food.

Inspired by the headlines and media circus surrounding the race for the presidency, volunteers from HOK’s New York office wanted to use the hype to bring attention to the food drive. The team had some fun narrowing down the candidates to be featured and designing the 3D model for the sculpture. On build night, they arranged 3,120 tuna cans that slowly took shape as amusing snapshots of “Presidential CANdidates” Donald Trump and Kanye West.

At the end of the exhibit, all sculptures will be dismantled and more than 10,000 cans of food will be donated to City Harvest to help feed the hungry on Thanksgiving day.
