Salt Lake City Officials Reveal HOK’s Design for New Airport Terminal Redevelopment

Salt Lake City Exterior2

Officials unveiled renderings of Salt Lake City International Airport’s $1.8 billion terminal redevelopment.

Mayor Ralph Becker and Airport Director Maureen Riley showcased HOK’s design, highlighting features that will make the new terminal more “convenient, inspiring and sustainable,” according to the mayor.

The airport’s three current terminals will be consolidated into one large, three-level terminal with separate levels for departures and arrivals. The new terminal, which is being built west of the existing complex, is scheduled to open in 2020. The design is targeting LEED Gold certification and is addressing seismic considerations.

HOK’s design celebrates Utah’s natural beauty and reputation as an outdoor recreation hub. Exterior and interior colors are inspired by this stunning local landscape, and the terminal features large windows with views to the airfield and mountains.

“One of the great things about flying into Salt Lake City is flying into the valley between the mountain ranges on the approach to the airport,” says Robert Chicas, a director of HOK’s Aviation + Transportation practice. “This new terminal will be an extension of that experience.”

An open, art-filled space called “The Canyon” will house security screening areas, shopping and dining facilities, and an iconic architectural feature illuminated by changing colors.

More security checkpoint stations and an oversized meet-and-greet area separate from baggage claim will help ease congestion.

In collaboration with the airlines, the team developed a construction phasing strategy that will incrementally add facilities while minimizing disruption to the airport’s existing operations.
