ENR Names HOK’s Bill Johnson a Top 25 Newsmaker of 2014
HOK Design Principal Bill Johnson was honored along with 24 industry leaders at Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) annual Awards of Excellence event.
Johnson was named one of the “Top 25 Newsmakers of 2014” for his role designing the New Atlanta Stadium, which has consistently been recognized for its innovative operable roof design and leading-edge fan amenities.
ENR previously announced Johnson’s selection for the award in an article that highlighted his leadership in winning the project and developing the new stadium’s design concept.

His bold approach received praise from both client and industry leaders:
“What drew us to Bill was the fact that he and his team blew up current thinking in designing a sports and multipurpose venue. His approach was to re-imagine the stadium experience in every way. As a result, Bill set a new standard in the NFL and across multipurpose facilities.”
-Rich McKay, Falcons president and CEO
“It’s like Bill is on a never-ending quest to create a sensational game-day experience. Whether that means optimizing a venue’s technology, establishing the most user-friendly layout or giving fans the absolute best amenities, he is passionate about enriching the spectator experience.”
-Bill Hellmuth, president of HOK
“Bill is an expansive thinker, highly creative and super pragmatic. If one of his ideas doesn’t pan out, he has 10 more in his pocket.”
-Erleen Hatfield, a principal of Buro Happold, structural engineer of the New Atlanta Stadium
While Johnson calls the New Atlanta Stadium “the most complicated stadium ever attempted,” he is looking to the future and the next challenge on the horizon. Johnson shared with ENR that next time he wants “to focus on opening the concourse, not the roof. You always need to question the status quo.”
