AIA Honors ARTIC Project Team for Use of Building Information Modeling
The American Institute of Architects presents these awards to highlight outstanding case studies in the use of building information modeling (BIM) technology and processes on construction projects.
The Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) received a 2014 citation for “Stellar Architecture Using BIM” from the AIA’s Technology in Architectural Practice Knowledge Community (TAP).
The award was presented to HOK, architect for the ARTIC terminal; Parsons Brinckerhoff, the project manager and civil engineer; Buro Happold, which provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and enclosure engineering; and Clark Construction as general contractor. This is HOK’s fifth AIA TAP award.
ARTIC is a world-class, iconic gateway for Orange County’s transportation systems, including auto, bus and rail systems as well as future street car and high-speed trains. ARTIC presents itself to the region in a dramatic fashion with its signature sculptural shape. The structural simplicity of local airship hangars and the great halls of historic rail stations like Grand Central Station inspired the design. High-tech, translucent ETFE polymer pillows infuse the grand hall with lightness and transparency.
The team used BIM to clearly communicate the design to the clients and public, as well as to help the team develop the complex form, geometry and functions. BIM software enabled the team to produce 3D-printed study models, to analyze pedestrian and vehicular traffic to ensure safe path of travel and to confirm sustainable strategies to achieve the anticipated LEED Platinum certification. The team is using BIM to deliver coordinated documents in a compressed timeline while maintaining the design during construction.
When the project is complete, the city of Anaheim and its facility management team will have access to integrated BIM data for ongoing use in the building’s operations, maintenance and overall asset management.
“This is what BIM is,” commented the AIA TAP jury. “It is an innovative piece of architecture. The form is one of beauty and simplicity. The use of integrated design and modeling optimized the structure. … This group leveraged the power of BIM.”
